Most common symptoms complained of by participants are eyestrain, blurred vision and dry eyes. Other visual problems that might arise are headache and neck or shoulder pain.
If you are often hung out in front of a computer, then you should protect your eyes from the harmful radiation. Here are some tips to get you started:
- Use protective PC screen filter on your monitor to reduce the radiation.
- Choose low radiation PC monitor, such as LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor.
- Keep a distance of at least 45 cm between the eyes and monitor screen.
- Increase the intake of vitamin A supplements to keep the eyes healthy.
- Adjust the lighting intensity monitor with eye comfort. Normally either high or low brightness of monitor screen is not good for eye health. High brightness will make the eyes glare, while the low brightness may make the eyes become tired quickly. For that, try to adjust the monitor brightness and contrast until your eyes can see comfortably.
- Resting your eyes for a moment.
Do not keep staring at your monitor screen. Try to take a few moments to relax or resting your eyes. This will reduce eye and muscle fatigued. Refresh the eye by looking into another room, or looking at the blue sky or green plants. - Wink your eyes more often to avoid eyes become dry.
Rarely winking your eyes will make your eyes become dry. Therefore, wink your eyes frequently, because this will release tears and are spread to the entire surface of the cornea to keep the eye moist and crisp. - Adjust the screen position. Do not be too high or too low, because it can cause neck pain. In addition, if the monitor is too high from the eyesight, it will disrupt the air supplied to the brain. The monitor screen should be positioned parallel to the eyes. According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), as reported by Rctimes, to prevent eyestrain, it is suggested to place the monitor with the ergonomic position. The monitor should be placed 16-30 inches away from the eye, depending on how big the screen. Generally comfortable position to look at is 20 to 26 inches. If you feel that you are likely to have eye disorders, seek an ophthalmologist immediately to make sure that your eyes are always healthy and safe.
